The government says that people on income assistance programs like SNAP are freeloaders and all they have to do is earn more money. The truth is that the biggest freeloaders are right inside the government who steal from ordinary people by hijacking their tax money. I don't pay taxes for some idiot to snorkel over military graves. Presidential ballrooms and monuments are not authorized by we the people. How about a viable solution to keep the bodegas open and able to serve poor people? Make America healthy, right? Or is that some political catch phrase?

I can see that making a variety of health-promoting foods available at smaller stores is challenging, but surely it's worth the effort. People using public food assistance are not spending their own money. I support full funding of the SNAP program, but as a taxpayer, I don't want to subsidize health-damaging 'empty' calories like sodas, 'energy' drinks, candy, cookies etc. Resisting these often very tasty snacks is HARD. A clear prohibition would support parents in instilling good food habits in their children (and themselves) thereby avoiding a host of health problems down the line. "We can't afford it" is a clearer reason than "It's not good for you" giving parents a boost in setting their children on the path to a better life. The 'dignity' of allowing pure, unfettered choice is a sham. Real respect demands that you truly help even if you're criticized for it.
